Law Firm Website Design South Africa

Law firm website design for South African attorneys and conveyancers

Website Design for Attorneys, Conveyancers and Law Firms

Law firm website design for South African practices: attorneys, conveyancing firms, personal injury and RAF practices, labour law firms, family law practices and debt recovery attorneys.

A law firm website is not built the way an ordinary business website is built. Most businesses sell with proof. Before and after photographs, results, numbers, named clients. An attorney cannot do any of that. The Legal Practice Council regulates what legal practitioners may publish about themselves, which removes the usual proof from the table and forces the site to earn trust a different way.

New Perspective Design builds law firm websites that work inside those limits. The sections below set out what actually changes in the brief, based on what we see on legal sites rather than on general web design advice.

Law Firm Website Design at a Glance

Who it is for Attorneys, conveyancing practices, personal injury and RAF firms, labour law, family law, criminal, estates and debt recovery practices.
Main website visitor Somebody researching a legal problem well before they are ready to appoint anybody.
What the site must prove Credibility, without advertising outcomes. The Legal Practice Council limits what a firm may claim, so the proof comes from the people and the practice areas.
How enquiries arrive Overwhelmingly by email, direct from the visitor’s own inbox. The contact form and WhatsApp are largely ignored, unlike most service industries.
Must-have pages One page per practice area, attorney profiles, a resources or insights library, fees and FICA, a page per office, contact.
Strongest content Plain language articles explaining legal processes, step by step. Conveyancing is the clearest example.
Attorney profiles carry Position in the firm, year of admission, courts they appear in, practice areas, notary or conveyancer status, qualifications and languages.
Compliance LPC Code of Conduct governs all publicity including the website. POPIA governs enquiry handling, so submissions are emailed rather than stored in the website database.
Main marketing channels Google Ads search campaigns, and SEO driven by content production: articles and documents explaining legal processes.
Weakest channel Social media. Legal practices get very little from it, and the regulatory limits make it harder still.

Most Law Firm Enquiries Arrive by Email, Not Through the Form

This is the single biggest difference between a law firm website and nearly every other service website we build.

On a plumbing or home services site, a WhatsApp button is usually the best performing contact point on the page, because the visitor has a burst pipe and wants somebody now. Put the same button on a law firm site and it is largely ignored. So is the contact form. Visitors copy the email address and write from their own inbox instead.

The reason is not hard to work out. The person is about to describe a divorce, a retrenchment, an accident or a dispute with a business partner. They do not want that detail typed into a stranger’s web form, and they want a copy of what they sent sitting in their own sent items.

What that changes in the build:

  • The real email address goes on the page in plain, readable, selectable text. Not behind a button, not as an image, not hidden behind a form.
  • Where the firm can manage it, each practice area gets its own address or named contact rather than one general inbox.
  • The form stays short. Name, contact number, one line on the matter. It is there to start a conversation, not to take instructions.
  • The page is never designed so that the form is the only way through.

An agency that builds a law firm site the way it builds a retail site puts a long qualifying form on every page, then reports a low enquiry count. The enquiries are not missing. They went straight to the inbox and were never counted.

A Law Firm Website Is a Research Library Before It Is a Sales Page

People research a legal problem long before they are ready to appoint anybody. They want to know what transfer duty is, how long a property transfer takes, what they can claim from the Road Accident Fund, what notice period applies to a dismissal. That reading happens first, and the firm that answered the question tends to be the firm that gets the call.

Conveyancing is the clearest case. A conveyancing practice with a deep, well organised set of plain language articles on the transfer process, bond registration, costs and timelines will outperform a five page brochure site by a wide margin, because every one of those questions is typed into Google every day by somebody who is about to buy a house.

So we weight the architecture differently for law firms:

  • A resources or insights section treated as a main part of the site, not a neglected blog tacked on at the end.
  • One article per real client question, written in plain language rather than legalese.
  • Every article linked to the practice area page it belongs to, and every practice area page linked back to its articles.
  • Guides, checklists and process explainers that hold their value for years, rather than firm news.

A post announcing that the firm has moved offices attracts nobody. An article explaining what happens between offer to purchase and registration attracts the person who is about to need a conveyancer. This is also what gets a firm quoted in AI Overviews and AI answer engines, which now sit above the normal results for exactly these research questions.

What a South African Law Firm Website Actually Needs

These are the parts of the brief that differ from a standard business site. The ordinary requirements still apply, but these are the ones that decide whether a legal site works.

1. Attorney profiles, because the people are the proof

A firm that may not advertise outcomes has to put its credibility somewhere, and that somewhere is the people. After the practice area pages, attorney profiles are the most read pages on a law firm website. Each profile should carry the practitioner’s position in the firm, year of admission, the courts in which they appear, the practice areas they handle, any further status such as notary public or conveyancer, their qualifications and the languages they practise in. Facts, stated plainly, no adjectives. A visitor choosing between two firms reads the people before anything else.

2. Copy that stays inside the Legal Practice Council Code of Conduct

The Legal Practice Council’s Code of Conduct, made under section 36(1) of the Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014 and published in Government Gazette 42337 with effect from 29 March 2019, covers publicity by any means, in any medium, including websites and social media. Publicity may not misrepresent the nature of the service offered, and touting is prohibited. Specialist or expert claims are permitted on the basis of specialised qualifications or experience, but the Council may call on a practitioner to justify such a claim and may order them to stop making it.

In practice that removes most of what a marketing agency would normally write. No success rates. No guaranteed outcomes. No descriptions of matters won for named clients. No superlatives the firm cannot support if asked. We write legal copy as description rather than persuasion, and the firm or its compliance person signs the wording off before it goes live. Copy full of claims is a risk that sits on the firm’s name, not on the agency’s.

3. POPIA handling that matches how sensitive the data is

A single law firm enquiry can contain medical detail, financial detail, information about a criminal matter, or personal information about a third party who never agreed to anything. That is precisely the category POPIA treats most strictly, and it is arriving through a web form.

How we build it: forms collect the minimum needed to make contact, and submissions are emailed to the firm rather than stored in the website database. A site that quietly saves every enquiry into WordPress is building a growing store of sensitive personal information on a web server that nobody logs in to check. The site also needs a real privacy policy written for that firm, not a template, and a clear consent line at the point of submission.

4. One page per practice area, written for the client not the profession

Conveyancing, family law, labour, RAF and personal injury, criminal, estates, debt recovery and commercial work are separate searches with separate intent, so they need separate pages. Each page should explain what the process involves, what the client needs to bring, roughly how long it takes and what happens next. The page that explains the process ranks. The page that lists the practice area as a heading and three lines of text does not.

5. Fees, FICA and the practical questions

Firms cannot always publish fees, and tariffs vary by matter. What they can publish is the shape of it: whether a first consultation is charged, how the firm bills, what FICA documents a new client must supply, and what to bring to the first meeting. Those pages answer real searches and they cut down the admin work on the firm’s side.

6. Local search for each office

Most legal searches carry a location. A firm with offices in more than one town needs a real page per office with its own address, its own practitioners and its own Google Business Profile behind it, not one contact page listing three addresses.

7. Speed, mobile and accessibility

Legal content is long, and long pages get heavy. On a mobile connection a slow legal site loses the reader in the middle of the article they came for. Typography, line length and contrast matter more here than on a short brochure site, because people genuinely read these pages end to end.

8. Secure document exchange, where the firm wants it

Some firms want a client portal for document exchange. It is worth building when there is a real volume of documents moving, and it is wasted money when there is not. Email with proper authentication in place handles most practices well enough.

What the Best Lawyer Website Designers Do Differently

If you are comparing agencies for a law firm website, these are the questions that separate them:

  • Will you write copy that stays inside the LPC Code of Conduct, and will you put it in front of our compliance person before launch?
  • Where do form submissions go, and are they stored in the website database?
  • How many articles are in the plan, who writes them, and are they written for clients or for other attorneys?
  • Is the firm’s email address visible in plain text on the page, or is everything funnelled through a form?
  • Who owns the domain and the hosting account when the project is finished?

An agency that cannot answer those is building a brochure with a law firm’s name on it.

How Law Firms Actually Market Themselves in South Africa

The channel mix for a legal practice looks nothing like the mix for a retailer or a contractor. Knowing which channels do the work changes what the website has to be built for.

Google Ads, search campaigns

This is the main paid channel for law firms, and it works because legal intent is explicit. Somebody typing “divorce attorney” or “conveyancing attorney” into Google is not browsing. The campaigns that perform are search campaigns pointed at specific practice areas, each one landing on its own practice area page rather than on the home page. Ad copy has to stay inside the same LPC limits as the website, so no outcome claims and no superlatives the firm cannot justify.

SEO through content production

This is where legal differs from most sectors, and it is the strongest long-term channel. Law firms win search by publishing useful material: articles and documents that explain legal processes in plain language. What a transfer involves, what notice period applies, what you need for an RAF claim, what happens at each stage of a divorce.

That is the same point as the resource library above, and it is why a legal site is architected around content rather than around a services list. The firm that explains the process is the firm that gets found, and increasingly the firm that gets quoted when somebody asks an AI assistant the same question.

Social media

Nothing to speak of. Legal practices get very little from social, and the regulatory limits on what a firm may say make it harder still. We would not build a legal site around social sharing or spend the budget there, and we would rather put that money into the article library.

The practical consequence for law firm website design: build the practice area pages so they work as Google Ads landing pages, and build the resources section so it can carry a growing library of process articles. Those two things carry the marketing. Everything else is secondary.

Why Law Firms Use New Perspective Design

We build and host websites for South African businesses, including legal practices, and we build them to the constraints above rather than to a generic template. That means copy written as description rather than claims, enquiries emailed to the firm instead of stored in the database, practice area pages built one per area, and a resources section that is planned from the start rather than bolted on later.

Our work is covered by a 4.9 star Google rating across more than 100 reviews, and we are a certified Google Ads Partner.
