How Much Does It Cost to Build a Website in South Africa? One Real Build, Start to Finish [2026]
This article follows one real website project from brief to launch. Prices are taken from two paid invoices dated January and August 2026. Timelines are approximate, from our project records.
How Much Does It Cost to Build a Website in South Africa? The Short Answer
On this real project, it cost R7,640 once-off to build a website in South Africa with online bookings and payments. That was R4,490 for a six-page website in January 2026, then R3,150 in August 2026 to add a full booking calendar with PayFast payments and automatic invoice emails. Monthly hosting ran separately.
The build happened in two stages because the business needs changed along the way. That turned out to be the cheaper route: the booking system was added to the existing website instead of starting over.
- Stage 1: six-page website (R4,490). Content in about 14 days, prototype in about 10, revisions in about 7.
- Stage 2: booking calendar system (R3,150). About two weeks waiting for payment gateway approval, then about 14 days to build.
- Total build cost (R7,640). Plus monthly hosting from the start.
The Project: A Counselling Practice That Needed Online Bookings
Mercy & Manna Counselling, run by Willem Semmelink, came to us for a six-page website with hosting. Clients would book sessions through a Calendly booking page embedded on the website.
It was a standard brief, and it was priced as one. What changed was the booking system, and how the practice dealt with that change is the useful part of the story.
Stage 1: Building the Six-Page Website (R4,490)
The first invoice, in January 2026, covered the website package and monthly hosting.
| Line item | What it covered | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Six-page website | 15 edited stock images, WhatsApp chat and contact form, FAQ section, testimonials, gallery, Google Maps, on-page SEO, Google Business Profile, Analytics and Search Console integration | R4,490 |
| Website hosting (monthly) | Managed web and mail server, domain registration, SSL, 15 GB storage, weekly backups, security checks, one update request or 30 minutes of support a month | Monthly |
The R4,490 price is for our six-page standard website package. It is a different package from the small business and six-page dynamic websites priced in our other guides, which is why the figure sits lower.
The timeline ran in three steps. Content arrived about 14 days after the deposit. The prototype took about 10 days. Revisions took about 7 days, and the website launched.
Content was the longest single step. That is the stage the client controls, and our breakdown of how much website design costs in South Africa shows why it takes 15% of the hours on a typical build.
Why the Booking System Changed
With the website live, the embedded Calendly booking turned out to be too limited for how the practice wanted to take bookings. After a discussion, we turned the website into a store with full booking capabilities: a calendar clients book from on the front end, a calendar the practice manages on the back end, and payment at the time of booking.
The six pages already built stayed as they were. The booking system was added on top, so the practice paid for the new functionality only.
Stage 2: Adding the Booking Calendar System (R3,150)
| Line item | What it covered | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Booking calendar system | Back-end calendar management, front-end calendar display, PayFast payment gateway, time blocks setup, 3 to 5 session types loaded with no limit on adding more, plus automatic invoice emails with SMTP mail setup | R3,150 |
Most of the time in this stage had nothing to do with building. Before the calendar could take payments, the practice’s PayFast merchant account had to be approved, which took about two weeks. About a week passed after that, and the booking system itself took about 14 days to build.
Testing was short, because the parts to check were the calendar links and the payment flow.

What This Build Shows About Website Costs
Building in stages costs less than guessing upfront
The practice started with an embedded booking tool and moved to a full booking system once it knew what it needed. Paying R3,150 to extend a working website cost far less than rebuilding it, and far less than paying for a booking system on day one that might have been specified wrong.
Booking with payments adds a clear, fixed amount
A calendar with PayFast payments and automatic invoices added R3,150 to this build. It is the same pattern as the two five-page medical websites in our guide to how much a website costs in South Africa: page count sets the base price, and functionality adds to it.
Waiting time is not build time
Of the roughly 35 days in stage 2, only about 14 were build work. Payment gateway approval took two weeks and sat completely outside the design process. If your website will take payments, apply for your PayFast or other merchant account early, before the build starts.

Building a Website in South Africa: Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a website in South Africa?
On this project, the six-page website took about a month from deposit to launch: about 14 days for content to arrive, 10 days for the prototype and 7 days for revisions. Adding a booking system later took about 14 days of build time, after a two-week wait for payment gateway approval.
How much does it cost to add online booking to a website?
On this build, a booking calendar with front-end and back-end management, PayFast payments, time blocks, session types and automatic invoice emails cost R3,150 once-off, added to an existing website.
How long does PayFast approval take for a website?
For this client, PayFast merchant approval took about two weeks. The approval happens between the business and the payment provider, so apply before the build starts to keep it from delaying launch.
Can I add features to my website later without rebuilding it?
Yes, if the website is built on a platform that can grow. This practice started with an embedded booking tool and later added a full booking and payment system to the same WordPress website, paying only for the new functionality.
