Average Cost of a Website in South Africa: What Clients Budget vs What They Actually Pay [2026]

Average Cost of a Website in South Africa: What Clients Budget vs What They Actually Pay [2026]

Figures in this article come from 49 website quotes New Perspective Design issued between 21 July and 29 September 2026. Quotes under R3,490 (logos, labels, small add-ons and hourly work) were excluded. Budget ranges come from client enquiries over the same period.

What Is the Average Cost of a Website in South Africa? The Short Answer

Across 49 website quotes we issued in mid-2026, the median accepted quote was R9,980 and the average accepted quote was R12,528 , once-off and excluding VAT. Clients who name a budget usually say R6,000 to R10,000 , and that is exactly where quotes are most likely to go ahead: 80% of decided quotes in that range were accepted.

The average cost of a website in South Africa sits above the typical budget because a handful of larger builds pull it up. Most small and medium businesses pay close to R10,000.

  • Typical budget named: R6,000 to R10,000. Most clients don’t state a budget at all.
  • Median accepted quote: R9,980. Half of accepted website quotes were below this, half above.
  • Average accepted quote: R12,528. Higher than the median because of a few large projects.
  • Median quote that did not go ahead: R16,990. Larger quotes are far less likely to proceed.

What South African Clients Say Their Website Budget Is

Most people who ask us for a website quote never mention a number. They describe the business, list a few pages and wait to see what comes back.

“Most clients actually don’t disclose their budgets. But generally when they do, it’s around about six to ten thousand rand.”

Juan Preuyt, founder of New Perspective Design

That range matches the packages small businesses most often need. R6,000 to R10,000 covers our small business website (R5,590) , a lead generation website (R8,590) or a typical online store (from R7,580, with most landing around R9,980).

So the budget people bring is realistic for a five to twelve page business website. It stops being realistic when the brief grows, which we cover below.

What We Quoted vs What Clients Actually Paid

We looked at every quote of R3,490 or more that we sent over roughly ten weeks, from single landing pages to full corporate builds. Here is how the numbers compare.

Measure Amount (once-off, ex VAT)
Median of all 49 website quotes R10,230
Median accepted quote R9,980
Average accepted quote R12,528
Median quote that did not go ahead R16,990
New Perspective Design website quotes, 21 July to 29 September 2026. Quotes under R3,490 excluded.

The gap between the last two rows is the useful part. The quotes clients accepted clustered just under R10,000. The quotes that expired clustered around R17,000, well above what most businesses planned to spend.

The R6,000 to R10,000 Sweet Spot

Of the website quotes in the R6,000 to R10,000 range that reached a decision, 80% were accepted. No other price range did as well.

The simplest explanation is that the price matches the budget clients already had in mind, so there is no gap to close. The scope at that level is also easy to picture: a clear set of pages, a contact pathway, basic on-page SEO and hosting.

Above R10,000, the picture changes. Bigger quotes usually carry custom functionality, large page counts or integrations, and they sit further from the budget most businesses arrive with. The median quote that did not go ahead was R16,990.

Why the Average Website Cost Can Mislead You

An average is only useful if you know what sits inside it. Three things skew the average cost of a website in South Africa.

A few large projects pull the number up

Our accepted quotes ranged from under R5,000 to over R45,000. One large build moves the average by thousands of rand, which is why the median (R9,980) is the better guide for a small business.

The mix of website types

From 2024 to 2026, about 40% of our projects were landing pages, starter and small business websites, about 30% were online stores and catalogues, and about 25% were corporate websites. The final 5% were custom builds. An “average” blends a R1,990 landing page with an R18,000 custom build, and neither client pays the average.

The website is only part of the first invoice

In the three invoices we broke down line by line , the website itself made up between 47% and 77% of the first bill. Logos, legal pages, cookie consent, SEO and hosting made up the rest. Hosting on those invoices ran from R199 to R320 a month.

When Clients Go Over Budget: Two Real Examples

Most of our clients land within the budget they expected. The two that didn’t went over for the same underlying reason: the business turned out to need more than the original brief described.

Reclamiralove Finance & Tax: five pages became fourteen

Reclamiralove came to us with a five-page brief. Once the content arrived, it was clear the services needed their own pages to be explained properly. The finished website had 14 pages, invoiced at R12,450 for the website alone. The price rose because the scope rose, and every added page carried real content.

Mercy & Manna Counselling: a booking tool that wasn’t enough

Mercy & Manna started with a six-page website at R4,490 and a Calendly booking page embedded on it. Calendly proved too limited for the practice, so we added a full booking calendar with PayFast payments for R3,150. The total build came to R7,640, about 70% more than the original website. We wrote up the full two-stage build here .

Neither client was overcharged. Both paid for work they needed and didn’t know about on day one. That is the most common reason a website costs more than the first number in someone’s head.

How to Set a Realistic Website Budget in South Africa

Use what the numbers above show, not the average on its own.

  • For a five to twelve page business website or a standard online store, budget R6,000 to R10,000 once-off. That is where most of our small business projects land.
  • If you need bookings, payments, quote requests or integrations, plan for more, or build in stages and add features later.
  • Write your content outline before asking for quotes. If you have 12 services, you probably need more than five pages, and knowing that early keeps the quote accurate.
  • Budget separately for monthly hosting, and for logo, legal pages or SEO if you don’t have them yet.
  • Tell your designer your budget. A designer who knows the number can scope to it, instead of quoting blind.

Average Website Cost in South Africa: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost of a website in South Africa in 2026?

Across 49 website quotes we issued between July and September 2026, the average accepted quote was R12,528 and the median was R9,980, once-off and excluding VAT. Most small business websites land close to R10,000.

What budget should I set for a small business website?

R6,000 to R10,000 covers most five to twelve page business websites and standard online stores. It is also the range where 80% of our decided quotes went ahead. Bookings, payments and integrations cost more.

Why do website projects go over budget?

Usually because the business needs more than the first brief described. In our two over-budget examples, one website grew from five to 14 pages once the content arrived, and the other needed a full booking and payment system after an embedded booking tool proved too limited.

Does the average website cost include hosting?

No. The figures in this article are once-off build prices. Monthly hosting is separate, and on the invoices we have published it ran from R199 to R320 a month.
